2020 Heisman odds: Nearly half the money bet at BetMGM has been placed on 3 QBs not named Trevor Lawrence

Two quarterbacks have become more popular Heisman bets than Trevor Lawrence.

The Clemson QB is the favorite for the 2020 Heisman Trophy at +300. And eight percent of bettors at BetMGM have placed their money on Lawrence, a player who looks poised to be the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

But believe it or not, more people have placed bets on Louisville’s Micale Cunningham and Florida’s Kyle Trask.

Cunningham is at +2000 and has been tied for the eighth favorite on the board. Cunningham emerged as a sophomore in 2019 as Louisville prospered under Scott Satterfield. He completed over 62 percent of his passes for 2,061 yards and 22 touchdowns to just five interceptions. He also rushed for 482 yards and six scores. The promise of improvement in 2020 and his ranking among the favorites has led 12 percent of bettors to put their money on Cunningham.

Just over 10 percent of bettors have put their cash on Trask. And the people that are betting on Trask are betting relatively large sums of money. BetMGM said that 23.5 percent of its total handle (cash amount of bets received) is on Trask. Approximately 13.5 percent of the handle is on Cunningham.

Trask (+2500) is entering his first full season as Florida’s starter. He was efficient after taking over for the injured Feleipe Franks. Trask threw for over 2,900 yards and had 25 touchdowns and just seven interceptions a year ago. He threw for over 300 yards in three of his last four games and completed over 60 percent of his passes in all but one of his 10 starts in 2019.

While Cunningham has played a game so far in 2020 — he threw three TDs and rushed for another in a win over Western Kentucky — Trask’s season doesn’t start until Sept. 26. Lawrence, meanwhile, was an extremely efficient 22-of-28 passing for 351 yards and three total touchdowns in a blowout win over Wake Forest.

College football betting trends should change

After Trask and Cunningham, Texas QB Sam Ehlinger (+1200) has had the third-most money wagered on him at 12 percent of the total handle at BetMGM. And we’re guessing that bettors’ Heisman trends are going to be evolving quickly over the next few weeks.

Until this week, no Big Ten players were on the Heisman betting board because of the conference’s postponed season. But now that the conference has announced its intention to begin the football season on Oct. 24, players like Ohio State’s Justin Fields and Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan will be eligible for bets and likely affect other players’ odds.

If the Pac-12 starts its season sometime this fall too, that would further shake up the betting lineup. USC QB Kedon Slovis could be a trendy dark-horse pick.
