Patrick Mahomes’ $500 Million Extension and 50 Other Biggest NFL Contracts of 2020
Just because sports remains at a standstill doesn’t mean sports news has to take a break as well. While the NFL season remains questionable with coronavirus cases rising sharply around the country, the Kansas City Chiefs made huge news recently when they signed the league’s biggest new star Patrick Mahomes to a record-breaking 10-year contract extension worth up to $503 million.
Granted, “only” $141.48 million is guaranteed at signing — meaning this isn’t quite the same commitment as those mega-deals in the MLB — but if Mahomes remains anywhere near as effective a passer as he’s been to this point, he has a great shot at playing out the full deal and getting himself halfway to his first billion by the time he’s 35. And that doesn’t even factor in the number of endorsement deals he already has.

Methodology: GOBankingRates used Spotrac’s NFL contract data from contracts signed in the year 2020 to find the 50 biggest NFL contracts signed so far in the 2020 offseason. GOBankingRates looked at all contracts signed by any player in the year 2020 and took the top 50 in terms of overall contact dollars to be included as the biggest contracts signed as of April 21, 2020. With this criteria set, GOBankingRates found the following data points for each of the 50 biggest contracts: (1) years of contract; (2) total dollars in the contract; (3) average annual value of contract found by dividing total dollars by the years in the contract; (4) total guaranteed money from the total contract; (5) total guaranteed money at the signing of the contract; (6) the percent of the contract that is guaranteed; and (7) the 2020 through 2024 cap hit for each contract where applicable. All data was collected on and up to date as of April 21, 2020.
