The ME & Lau Family Foundation are now accepting applications for their scholarship for Grade 12 and above students living in York Region.

Founded by Michelle Lau and Edward Lau, the foundation supports events and programs that benefit people with intellectual disabilities. This year is the fourth year in a row the scholarship has been offered.

“Edward and I funded this scholarship for three consecutive years since 2019 and throughout the pandemic,” says Michelle Lau.

Some of their key funding programs include the ME & Lau Family Foundation scholarship and an income tax filing clinic for people with low-income jobs and families with members that have disabilities. It also includes the annual String Music Art Exhibition, an event that honours the musical talents and contributions of people with intellectual disabilities and their families.

In partnering with Community Living York South (CLYS), the goal of the ME scholarship, she said, is to invest in the future generation for motivating them to continue to support the disability sector.

“We want to encourage and promote the attainment of higher education goals for individuals with a proven financial need and community achievements in York Region. (We want) to see our award recipients becoming leaders in their own field of expertise."

The applying criteria for the $1,000 scholarship are Grade 12 students or above in York Region who will be, or is currently, attending a post-secondary institution. Moreover, the family income threshold should be $120,000 or below.

The applicant needs to include a 500-word personal essay or a two-minute video in the application.

The essay or video should demonstrate the applicant's plan of contributing to Canadian society and to the people with intellectual disabilities. It should also convey why he/she is the most suitable candidate for this scholarship.

Deadline for application is September 30th and the recipient will be announced at the 2022 String Music Art Exhibition in Markham on November 13th.
