Chevy's coolest off-road-focused truck just got even better. You can now option the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 with a Duramax turbodiesel inline-six for the 2024 model year forward, the carmaker announced Thursday.

The Duramax engine joins the 6.2-liter V-8 as the only two available powertrains for the ZR2. Here the diesel is making 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque, 115 fewer horses but 35 more lb-ft of torque versus the gas engine. Max payload is down slightly, from 1980 pounds to 1960 pounds, as is towing, weirdly, from 13,300 pounds to 13,000 pounds.

Numbers don't tell the whole story, though. While the V-8 might have more power, we absolutely love the straight-six turbodiesel's ability to handle towing and daily driving with ease. It also allows for more mileage between fill-ups, and the down-low torque is undoubtedly better for off-road obstacles, where the ZR2 is designed to shine.

Other upgrades to the Silverado for 2024 include standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the lineup, while the High Country trim gets adaptive cruise control. There's a new Midnight Edition trim that adds black-painted powered running boards, and two new colors: Lakeshore blue and Slate gray metallic.
