2024 Election Results: Sheehan wins reelection in Lexington council’s 5th District
Incumbent Liz Sheehan has won reelection for the Urban County Council 5th District seat in Lexington, according to unofficial election results.
Sheehan, who has held the seat since 2020, won 60% of the votes. Meredith Price, a real estate agent who ran for the first time this election, received 40%.
“My team and I have been working so hard, so I feel like the results tonight are the culmination of all of the hard work that we have put in, and the collaboration that I have seen across my district,” Sheehan said Tuesday night.
“I am so pleased with all of that and to see all of the work really paying off.”
Sheehan is a faculty member in the department of psychology at the University of Kentucky. She previously won reelection to the seat in 2022.
“I’ve learned something every term — every term I learn more,” Sheehan said.
“I think that makes me a more efficient and effective council member every time. I’m very excited to continue the work that I’ve been doing for the most vulnerable in our community, folks that are experiencing homelessness, folks that are experiencing a lack of the meeting of their basic needs. I am very excited to get back to work for all of our residents that need their basic needs met in our community.”
She has made affordable housing a priority in her most recent term, and said that commitment will continue. Sheehan’s reelection means a focus on affordable housing will continue in Lexington.
“We need to continue working on making housing more affordable and accessible to people at all income levels, and that requires policy change to help units being built, like investing more in our affordable housing fund, or getting a position within our planning department that has been recommended called the development liaison position, to help move projects through the system,” Sheehan told the Herald-Leader last month.
District 5 includes several Lexington neighborhoods, including Kenwick, Chevy Chase and Ashland, and parts of the 40502, 40505 and 40517 zip codes.
