2024 Paralympics: Highlights from an inspiring opening ceremony in Paris

Less than three weeks after wrapping up the most successful non-boycotted Summer Games in Canadian history, Team Canada is back in Paris with the hope of matching the country's Olympic success at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.

Canada's 126-member team is among the 4,400 athletes from 168 countries competing in the 2024 Summer Paralympic Games. Team Canada won 21 medals, including five gold, in the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, which fell short of the 29 medals won in Rio in 2016 and the 31 medals won in London in 2012.

Track and field, as well as swimming, are expected to be fruitful medal events for Canada.

Wheelchair racer Brent Lakatos of Dorval, Que., Calgary triathlete Stefan Daniel, track cyclist Kate O'Brien, judoka Priscilla Gagne of Granby, Que., and swimmer Aurelie Rivard of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., are among the Canadians to watch.

As is para rower Jacob Wassermann, a survivor of the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash that killed 16 people in 2018. Wassermann will be making his Paralympic debut after just two years competing in his sport.

The 2024 Summer Paralympic Games kicked off on Wednesday afternoon with the opening ceremony. Organizers had promised a spectacular show, and they certainly didn't disappoint. Here are a few of our favourite images from the opening ceremony.
