3 GTA pedestrians struck and killed in past 24 hours

A pedestrian was struck and killed near Newmarket early Thursday morning, marking the third pedestrian death in the GTA in the last 24 hours.

York Regional Police Staff Sgt. Rob Bentham said the middle-aged man was walking on Hwy 11, just south of Bradford, when he was struck just before 6 a.m. Police believe he was walking on the highway itself, though its unclear why.

"It appears that two vehicles struck this pedestrian," Bentham said.

The man, whose identity was not released, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police said both drivers remained at the scene and are co-operating with police.

Hwy. 11 will remain closed in the area for several hours this morning while investigators try to piece together what happened.

There were two more fatal pedestrian collisions last night.

An 81-year-old man died in hospital Thursday morning after being struck by an SUV on Millwick Drive, near the intersection of Islington and Steeles, around 7:30 p.m. last night.

Police said a 43-year-old man was behind the wheel of the SUV, which was turning right from Plunkett Rd. onto Millwick when the pedestrian was struck.

No charges have been laid at this time, though the police investigation is ongoing.

And a 61-year-old woman was also killed after she was hit by a truck near the Markham Rd. and Finch Ave. E. around 4:40 p.m.

Police said the woman was "in the area of the intersection" when she was struck.

Police said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and is co-operating with investigators, police said.

No charges have been laid at this time.
