3 pedestrians struck within 30 minutes of each other on rainy Friday evening

Eli El-Chantiry calls on city to hire more paramedics

Ottawa paramedics say three pedestrians were struck in three different parts of the city within 30 minutes of each other Friday evening.

A female in her 20s suffered minor soft tissue injuries to her legs when she was struck in front of the Swiss Chalet at 1600 Merivale Road in central-west Ottawa around 4:50 p.m.

20 minutes later a man in his 60s or 70s was struck near the intersection of River Road and Earl Armstrong Road in south Ottawa, a collision paramedics said was a hit-and-run that happened right in front of a fire station there.

They added later he was taken to hospital in critical condition with a closed head injury.

Paramedics said an 11-year-old girl will be taken to CHEO with severe injuries to her left arm and leg after she was struck at the corner of Trim and Innes Roads in east Ottawa around 5:20 p.m.

She too was taken to hospital in critical condition, but east division police said both she and the man struck in south Ottawa are expected to survive.

Ottawa police officers at both their east and west division headquarters said roads were "horrible" at the time of the collisions because of rain, rush hour traffic and Black Friday shoppers.
