30-day psych assessment extension granted for accused killer in Calgary clinic stabbing

Jin Qing Huang found fit to stand trial on murder charge in death of Tiejun Huang

A judge has granted a 30-day extension for a psychiatric assessment of accused killer Jin Qing Huang.

Huang, 42, appeared in court briefly Wednesday, accused of first-degree murder in the death of Tiejun Huang, 51, an acupuncturist who was stabbed at his medical clinic on June 16.

Outside court, Huang's lawyer Adriano Iovinelli spoke to reporters.

"You could conclude that there are some mental health issues," he said.

"The question is whether or not that affects the person's ability to instruct and appreciate the process. So fitness is different from just having mental health concerns, and that's why we need this report to be done."

Even though the victim and accused share a surname, police said they are not related.

Jin Qing Huang is accused of attacking Tiejun Huang, allegedly believing there was an inappropriate relationship between his wife and the acupuncturist, according to police.

Huang is due back in court Aug. 26.
