4 Killed, 17 Injured After Semi-Truck Crashes into Vehicles Stuck in Michigan Traffic
"It appears the driver of the semi-truck did not see the backup and could not stop his vehicle in time," Michigan State Police said of the multi-car crash
Four people have died and multiple people have been injured after a semi-truck crashed into numerous vehicles stuck in traffic in Michigan over the weekend.
On Saturday, Nov. 2, at approximately 11:42 p.m. local time on Interstate 96 near the Michigan 52 highway, "numerous vehicles were stopped on the expressway" due to work on the power lines being done, the Michigan State Police (MSP) First District said on X (formerly known as Twitter).
"The troopers [from the Lansing and Brighton Post] had just completed a shutdown on westbound I-96 at M-52 on the overpass and had just reopened the expressway," the MSP said in the post.
"A semi-truck with [a] trailer was westbound on the expressway coming up on the stopped traffic. It appears the driver of the semi-truck did not see the backup and could not stop his vehicle in time," the statement added.
"The semi-truck was in the left lane of travel and struck numerous vehicles. The impact of the crash caused the semi-truck and numerous vehicles to catch fire," police confirmed.
In a further update shared on X on Sunday, Nov. 3, police said 17 "drivers and occupants of vehicles involved in the crash were taken to Sparrow and McLaren Hospital in Lansing."
Police confirmed a 29-year-old male from Carson City, who was driving a Ford F-150 pickup, had been killed in the crash. A 20-year-old female, a 43-year-old female and a 47-year-old male, all from Lansing, also died.
"The victims were in a Chevy Trax and were related," police stated.
The driver of the truck "was taken to University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor for treatment of his injuries," the MSP update said, confirming the driver's age and hometown were "unknown at this time."

"Westbound I-96 at M-52 will be closed for an indefinite period. Additionally, north and south bound M-52 is closed at the I-96 overpass until the bridge is inspected," the MSP said in the post.
The MSP didn't have any additional updates when contacted by PEOPLE, and the Michigan Department of Transportation — who are inspecting the bridge — didn't immediately respond.
