4-year-old boy walks for the first time since losing both legs in emotional clip

A 4-year-old boy has taken his first steps after losing his lower legs to sepsis.

William Reckless spent three months in intensive care after being diagnosed with the condition in January. Doctors were forced to amputate both his lower legs and parts of his fingers. But in May, William received prosthetics and has been learning to walk all over again.

Footage shows young William achieving the heartwarming milestone. The 4-year-old slowly inches toward his parents Gemma and Michael Reckless. Finally, when he reaches Gemma, he gives her a kiss.

“When your baby takes their first steps it’s magical,” Gemma told Yahoo. “But when they have to learn a second time, after months of watching their pain, fear, frustration, hard work and determination, the pride we feel is something else.”

The mother’s instincts may have been what saved William. Gemma took him to a doctor when he wasn’t feeling well but the physician said it was nothing more than a virus. Certain that it was more serious, Gemma returned to the hospital a couple of days later.

Within hours of his arrival, William was placed in a medically induced coma for eight days. He remained in intensive care for three months as he struggled with a blood clot, collapsed lung and a brain injury due to oxygen deprivation.

The Reckless family is sharing their story to raise awareness about sepsis. If you’d like to support the family’s crowdfunding campaign to pay for William’s future prosthetics, be sure to donate at Just Giving.
