4 patients stable after chemical released into dialysis water supply at Royal Alex

Four patients at Edmonton's Royal Alexandra Hospital are recovering after a chemical was accidentally released into water used for dialysis treatment.

"We apologize for this incident – it should not have happened. We are working with our patients and families to support them," read a release sent by Alberta Health Services.

"It is important to note that there is no longer any risk to any patients."

AHS said the accident was due to a valve that was turned during cleaning, which allowed the chemical to enter the water supply used for dialysis.

The water supply was immediately turned off, according to the agency.

AHS would not release specific information on the patient's' conditions, citing privacy, but did say all four are stable. Details on the chemical were also not released.

The hospital is now using portable dialysis machines while the water supply system is being cleaned.
