4 taken to hospital in workplace railway incident near Labrador City

1 still in hospital after 'railway incident' near Labrador City

The details surrounding what was initially referred to by police as a train collision near Labrador City are unclear as of Wednesday evening.

Four Iron Ore Company of Canada employees were taken to hospital. Two are still being treated as of Wednesday night, a company spokesperson said, while the other two have been discharged.

The men were taken to the Labrador West Health Care Centre, according to the IOC. Police said all four sustained "what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries."

Labrador City fire and ambulance services and police responded to the incident at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday. A large crane or service vehicle that travels on tracks appeared to have been involved.

The IOC confirmed later Wednesday that the "incident occurred during maintenance work on the railway and did not involve a train."

Police initially referred to it as a motor vehicle collision, but it's not clear what, if anything, the railway vehicle collided with. Late Wednesday evening, police confirmed that no other vehicles were involved.

All railway traffic has been suspended until further notice, the company said in a statement.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said the Trans-Labrador highway between Labrador City and Churchill Falls was closed earlier Wednesday but has since reopened.

Police did not confirm that what happened was accidental and requested anyone with information call the RNC or Crime Stoppers. The Labrador West detachment continues to investigate.
