Inquest into Stony Mountain inmate's murder now seeking participants

A 40-year-old man who was serving time at Stony Mountain Institution near Winnipeg on drug and weapons offences has died in custody, prison officials have announced.

Emergency personnel were unable to resuscitate Lawrence McMahon and he died on Saturday, officials with Correctional Service Canada said in a news release Monday.

At the time of his death, McMahon was in the middle of a two-year sentence on two counts of possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking and one count of unauthorized possession of a restricted weapon. His sentence began on Feb. 16, 2016.

Prison officials did not say how McMahon died. His next of kin have been notified, as well as police and the coroner's office, officials said.

Correctional Service Canada says the circumstances surrounding his death will be reviewed, as is the case for all inmate deaths.
