5 things to do in Edmonton this weekend

This weekend, you can choose between indoor and outdoor markets, laughing out loud or hiding and seeking.

Comedy masters

What: Rapid Fire Theatre is hosting the Prairie Bowl Festival this weekend, bringing together the zaniest of western Canada’s improv players for a three-day head-to-head battle of hilarity. And good news – tickets cost only $12!

When? Shows daily from November 20 to 22

Make the most of winter

What: It’s old news that winter is not everybody’s cup of tea – however, as Edmontonians, it’s kind of our duty to try to embrace the season, which is precisely what All is Bright is about. On Saturday, 124th Street will seek to celebrate the season with live music, food trucks, street performers, ice and light displays and more in a special outdoor market.

When? November 22 from 3 to 8 p.m.

To market

What: More than 140 Canadian crafts-folk will gather to sell their wares this weekend at The Enjoy Centre for the Make it! market in St. Albert. “This is not your traditional craft show,” say organizers, promising “funky, hip and modern” items, ethically-made by master artisans. Entry is $6. More information of the sale and its exhibitors is available here.

When? Open daily from November 20 to 23

Medley of melodies

What: Classical, classic rock or a new classic – once again, there’s lot of music on the offer this weekend.

- The Tokyo Police Club and Said the Whale are playing the Starlite Room Thursday night at 8 p.m.

- The Edmonton Chamber Music Society will be joined by Constantinople and soprano Suzie Leblanc at Friday’s concert at the Robertson Wesley United Church

- Shakey Graves (with opener Rayland Baxter) will take the stage at the Starlite on Saturday night

- The ESO, joined by several special guest musicians, will play the music of Gabrieli, Vivaldi and Haydn Sunday afternoon at the Winspear Centre

- John Fogerty will perform some of the songs that defined Creedence Clearwater Revival Sunday night at Rexall Place

Sports on skates

What: I’m reminded that skating season is fast approaching. While there’s no word yet on when the outdoor city rinks will open for the season, you can sharpen your skills at the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace in the meantime. Or, if you prefer to watch rather than strap on a pair, the Edmonton Oilers play the New Jersey Devils Thursday night and the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday at Rexall Place.

Odds and Ends

- This month’s Dark Matters night at the Telus World of Science will include a special adults-only game of hide and seek (HIDE AND SEEK IN A SCIENCE MUSEUM!), as well as a special menu served up in the cafe.

- The Alley Kat Brewery is hosting a Movember ‘Stache Bash Thursday night starting at 5 p.m.

- Acclaimed author Joyce Carol Oates will speak Sunday night as the closing event for the Festival of Ideas
