Scare yourself silly

What: Haunted houses abound in and around Edmonton this time of year. There's Deadmonton in the old Paramount Theatre downtown, the Hospital of Horror on 107A Avenue, Carnage Caverns in Fort Saskatchewan, and Vampires Mansion in Sherwood Park. Take along a good friend — or someone you want to get very close to.

Shock the monkey at the ballet

What: Citie Ballet teams up for their latest show Encounters with former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel, who left the band decades ago to become a solo recording artist and songwriter extraordinaire. Gabriel composed the symphonic score for the ballet, which combines classical moves with contemporary dance. He'll be your sledgehammer.

Seven Harry Potter books in seventy minutes

What: Potted Potter is the unauthorized Harry Potter experience and a parody of the beloved books by J.K Rowling. Get the gist of all seven books plus a live quidditch game. Expelliarmus!

What: Toy Guns and Let's Swing Halloween Dance party will give you plenty of chances to bust out those swing moves or pretend you were one of the zombies in the Thriller video. Food, prizes and music from the Miss Behavin' Chorus Girls.

What: Celebrate all things Hungarian this weekend on the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution. Check out the goulash and more at the Hungarian Wine and Food Festival. You can learn about the arts in Hungary at the Hungarian Cultural Festival.

Check out the new 24-year-old conductor of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at the Winspear Centre Saturday night. He'll lead the orchestra in Chopin, Nielsen and Pepin. Starting at 10 a.m. Friday, all tickets to the Saturday show are on sale for 24 hours, for only $24. Because he's only 24, get it?
