5 things happening in New Brunswick this weekend

There's a lot to celebrate this weekend. Blueberries, Acadian culture, great deals, even greater music and candy falling from the sky.

So if you're wondering what to do, make sure to check out one of these five things happening in your region.

Dieppe International Kite Festival

Through Sunday you can take in a unique international event in Dieppe's Dover Park.

The Dieppe International Kite Festival's highlights are the daily candy showers, where wrapped candy is released from a high-flying kite for everyone to enjoy. The running with the bols event happens every day at 2 p.m., it's described as a tug-of-war with the wind and bols are parachute-type kites you run with.

The kite-making tent also takes place every day, there's a Nintendo games tent, inflatable games every day at 1 p.m., mad science demonstrations and acrobatic flights all day.

There will also be a night flight Friday. Forty flyers will fly their kites to the sound of music and motions of light at dusk.

Admission to the festival is free. Stage performances are $3 per person.

Granite Town Wild Blueberry Festival

The 7th annual festival will celebrate the home of the big blueberry in St. George, running from Thursday through Sunday.

Friday will be the Scotiabank yard sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. there will be a ball hockey tournament for ages 11 to 17 hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters Charlotte County​ and Town of St. George. At 4 p.m. there will be a spaghetti supper before the 6 p.m. car show at Granite Town Farms.

Saturday morning will be breakfast featuring wild blueberry pancakes from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. A farmers market will be held from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. at Granite Town Farms, a wild blueberry eating contest at 10 a.m. and a blueberry, salmon, chocolate and wild blueberry wine tasting from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday there will be laser tag from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Most events are free, but some including the breakfast and ball hockey cost between $5 and $8.


Acadie Rock

Through Thursday, Aug. 20, music, visual and performing arts will celebrate this Acadian- centred festival in Moncton.

Thursday night at 6 p.m. will be the opening ceremonies at Moncton's City Hall with music by Pierre Guitard and Troiselle followed by Les Païens et Tutta Musica at the Capitol Theatre at 8 p.m.

The after party will be at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre with Jedis of Funk and Les Deuxluxes at 10 p.m.

Friday night catch a 125th birthday celebration for Moncton at Riverfront Park with Joseph Edgar, Misteur Valaire, Marie-Pierre Arthur, Denis Richard, Joe Grass, DJ Froux and Beat Sexü.

Quinze Août is Saturday and starting at 10 a.m. there will be a puppet-making workshop at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre, a performance by Dansencorps at 11 a.m. and the St. George block party at 1 p.m. also at the Cultural Centre.

Celebrate Acadie for free Saturday night with performances by Lisa Leblanc, Les Hôtesses D'Hilaire, Sweet Crude, Cédric Vieno, Thomé Young and DJ Froux.

Most performances are free but tickets for events with admissions can be purchased online or at the Capitol Theatre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sussex Flea Market

The annual bargain-finder's dream is back from Friday through Sunday in Princess Louise Park.

With more than 900 vendors, the flea market is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. The annual Show & Shine will be held on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will also be plenty of food vendors to choose from, so arrive early and hungry.

Admission is $5 per adult. Children 12 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult.


New Brunswick Summer Music Festival

The New Brunswick Summer Music Festival delivers classical chamber music to Fredericton.

The festival focuses on at least two specific composers each year as well as invites Canadian and regional artists to join in on the fun. This year's composers are Healey Willan, Edward Elgar and Sir Ernest MacMillan.

Community concerts will be taking place throughout the city.

There will be music at Christ's Church Cathedral on Friday at noon with the sounds of Greig Holdberg and Weber. Also on Friday at 8:30 p.m. The Capital Complex will feature FUZE, a live interpretation of this year's classical composers Elgar, Willan and MacMillan by local musicians.

Saturday the percussion duo Greg Harrison and Jonny Smith or,Taktus, will have their CD release at Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m. for $10.
