5 weekend events in and around Vancouver May 29-31

Manitoba allows in-store brewing for home beer and wine makers

Whether you're looking to take a leisurely stroll on the North Shore, sip on an award winning craft beer or learn a new dance style, there's plenty of great events happening in and around Vancouver this weekend.

Here are On the Coast's top five picks:

1. The Art of Capoeira

This weekend is your chance to learn more about capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian art form that incorporates martial arts and dance.

Check out the gravity-defying acrobatics while listening to Brazilian percussion music, live vocals and drums. The free show will end with an interactive dance that involves the entire audience.

Saturday's event is at the ArtStarts Gallery in Vancouver and Sunday's event is at the New Westminster River Market. Sessions start at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. PT

2. Mariachi Festival

The sixth annual Mariachi Festival features bands from Mexico, the U.S. and Canada clad in stunning 'charro' suits and hats.

Mariachi originated in rural Mexico and has become a cultural phenomenon and a symbol of Mexican identity.

The festival features performances throughout the country, but the highlight is the closing gala Saturday night at Vancouver's Vogue Theatre.

3. Vancouver Craft Beer Week

Events are happening throughout town to celebrate everything craft beer. One of the highlights is the Craft Beer Awards Gala, where 18 judges conduct a blind tasting in 14 categories.

After choosing gold, silver, and bronze in their assigned styles, judges gather to choose 'Best in Show' among the 14 gold medal winners.

4. North Vancouver Art in the Garden

Art in the Garden is a two-day, self-guided tour of the North Shore's most beautiful gardens. There will be 36 local artists participating, as well as 20 musical performances throughout the area.

All you have to do to take part is pick up a free tour map at the library or go online and print one out for yourself. Admission is $1 per garden and is collected upon arrival.

5. Bhangra Fest​

The 10-day bhangra festival features more than 350 artists performing live music and dance in unique venues across Vancouver and Surrey.

The goal is to create innovative and collaborative performances that integrate bhangra with other art forms.
