Oozing body confidence as she emerges from the water in her shimmering gold bikini, Nicola Griffin looks every inch the swimsuit model. But Nicola isn’t a swimwear-pro, she’s a 56-year-old British mum of two who’s just made history by being the oldest model to appear in Sport’s Illustrated’s annual Swimsuit Issue. And considering it was the first time she’d ever worn a bikini, she absolutely nailed it.

Having some beef with the body-perfect models used in more traditional bikini campaigns, swimwear brand swimsuitsforall was determined to prove that diversity shouldn’t be a barrier to body confidence. While the retailer has been championing the body positive for years, this year it’s taking things a stage further by reminding you that people of all shapes, sizes – and ages – can rock a bikini body. Their latest campaign, #SwimSexy, not only features silver fox-ess, Nicola, but also curvy supermodel Ashley Graham, 28, and British Ghanaian model Philomena Kwao, all wearing super hot gold bikinis.

Just mention the words beach body and most woman get the bikini-fear, but imagine the first time you’ve ever worn one being for a photoshoot that’s going to be seen by millions of people and you’ll get an idea just how rookie model, Nicola was feeling.

“I didn’t realise I’d be wearing a bikini, and I was a little anxious — in my entire life, I’ve never been in a bikini,” She said.

“I’ve always been more comfortable in full swimsuits that hold everything in. It was very liberating, actually. I’ve got a rounded tummy — I’ve had twins — and I found that to be quite sexy while wearing a gold bikini.”

Speaking about the inspirational campaign, Moshe Laniado, CEO of swimsuitsforall told Mashable

“Our obsession with youth is a disease. It’s stunting us as people, as brands, and as an industry. If this campaign can help tackle this inequality even a little bit, we’ve done our job well.”

Nicola, who only began modelling after her children “flew the nest,” three years ago is hoping her appearance in the campaign will empower other women to feel better about the their bikini bodies.

“At the age of 56 I never dreamed that I would be in Sports Illustrated, much less in a bikini,” Griffin told Mashable. “As a mother I am so happy that [girls] can look at the #SwimSexy campaign and see that it’s OK to be curvy and all different sizes … it’s OK to be yourself.”

We couldn’t have put it better ourselves Nicola.
