6 out of 10 New Hampshire residents disapprove of Trump, according to new poll
New Hampshire's disapproval of President Donald Trump has reached a record high, a new survey finds.
According to a poll from the University of New Hampshire Survey's Center, whose results were released Monday, 60% of New Hampshire residents disapprove of Trump's work as president, while 39% approve of it. The 60% figure is the highest reported by UNH surveys during Trump's time in office.
The UNH poll, which was completed by about 2,000 respondents, shows that disapproval for Trump has steadily increased in the state over the past year. Forty-eight percent of respondents said that they "strongly disapproved" of Trump in April, compared to 55% in July.
Support for the president is largely split by party lines.
The poll found that 83% of Republicans approved of Trump's job performance, while only 37% of Independents and 1% of Democrats approved. The poll has a margin of error of 2.2 percent.
UNH noted that support among all three groups has been roughly the same since June, though approval has "declined among those aged 18 to 34 but remained largely stable among other age groups."
The survey also concluded that the approval of Trump was largely tied to the perception of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Only 2% of respondents disapproved of Trump's handling of COVID-19 while approving of his overall job performance, and only 1% approved of his handling of the pandemic but not his overall job performance.
This poll comes as Trump faces declining approval nationally for his handling of the pandemic.
When asked about Trump’s handling of COVID-19, a majority of Americans (56%) somewhat or strongly disapproved of his performance, while 37% somewhat or strongly approved, according to a survey from the Democracy Fund + UCLA Nationscape Project in July. That's an 8-point drop from April when 45% of Americans approved of Trump's handling of the coronavirus and 48% disapproved. The survey also saw declines in approval for Trump's handling of race relations and the economy over the past few months.
The Democracy Fund + UCLA Nationscape survey also found that a majority – 55% – strongly or somewhat disapproved of the job Trump is doing as president, while a combined 39% strongly or somewhat approved of it. Since April, Trump's national approval rating has dropped 7 percentage points, while his disapproval rating has risen 5 percentage points.
Trump also faces an increasing challenge in his polling numbers for re-election. RealClearPolitics found that former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic Nominee, leads him by more than seven points in national polls.
