6 city mayors win by acclamation

Municipal elections are more than a month away, but six Saskatchewan cities have already acclaimed their mayors.

Lloydminster, North Battleford, Humboldt, Swift Current, Meadow Lake and Melville each had just one official candidate.

In each city, only the incumbent mayor was running for the job.

Nominations closed Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. CST.

Jerrod Schafer, mayor of Swift Current, took to Twitter after the deadline passed.

"So humbled to be Mayor for a second term of @City_SC [Swift Current] by acclamation," he wrote. "Let's keep moving forward."

The six mayors will start their new terms on Thursday.

Meanwhile, in Regina, there were nine candidates for mayor as of Friday, while in Saskatoon, there were three.

There are no uncontested council races in either of Saskatchewan's two largest cities.

Civic elections are Oct. 24.
