6-Year-Old Pa. Girl Died Wearing a Soiled Diaper After Allegedly Being Locked in Sweltering Room for Days
The girl's uncle, another suspect in the case, is still at large
A 6-year-old girl in Pennsylvania died after being locked in a room for multiple days, authorities allege.
The girl's grandmother, Jazmine Rodriguez, 44, and her grandfather, Manuel Rodriguez Sr., 46, have been charged in connection with the death of the child, which was ruled a homicide, the Berks County District Attorney's Office said in a news release, according to ABC, Fox and NBC.
The outlets, citing the DA's office, reports that authorities were called to a home in Reading, Pa., on May 28 for a report of a young girl in cardiac arrest.
The child was taken away in an ambulance, but police noticed that she appeared to have been dead for some time, the DA's office reportedly said.
The medical examiner determined that the victim died of dehydration and prolonged exposure to heat due to neglect. According to the DA's office, the child had been left in a soiled diaper for multiple days prior to her death, which caused severe rashes, the outlets reported.
The DA's office reportedly said the room in which the girl was kept in may have reached 100 degrees with high humidity due to lack of air circulation.
The medical examiner said that the child's condition was consistent with her being locked in a room for more than three days, Fox reports.
A third suspect, the girl's uncle, Manuel A. Rodriguez, Jr., 20, is still at large.
All three suspects were charged with criminal homicide, unlawful restraint/serious bodily injury, false imprisonment, endangering welfare of children and related charges, the outlets report.
