62-year-old man dead after incident off coast of Bell Island

A 62-year-old man is dead after an incident off the shoreline of Bell Island on Sunday.

Bell Island and Holyrood RCMP responded to a call of a man in distress on a vessel in Conception Bay at 11 a.m. and transferred him by helicopter to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Around the same time as this incident, sources close to CBC News said a fire truck, ambulance, and several Royal Newfoundland Constabulary vehicles converged at the Sunset Keys marina in Conception Bay South.

Ocean Quest Adventures, a scuba diving company based out of Conception Bay South, confirmed with CBC that the man was with his wife on a chartered vessel owned by the company at the time.

The RCMP said the man's death is not being considered suspicious. Police said he was reportedly not scuba diving at the time.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
