62-year-old pedestrian dies in Beaufort-area traffic collision Monday night, coroner says
A 62-year-old pedestrian in Beaufort died after being struck by a car Monday evening, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Catherine Weichbrodt, of Beaufort, was pronounced dead on the scene of the collision at 6:03 p.m. Monday, according to Beaufort County Coroner David Ott. Her autopsy will be performed Wednesday.
The crash occurred just after 6 p.m. Monday as a 2001 four-door Toyota sedan traveled south on U.S. 21 (Trask Parkway), according to Master Trooper Gary Miller of the SCHP. In the area of Salt Creek Drive — slightly south of the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort — the Toyota collided with the pedestrian.
As of Tuesday afternoon, it was unknown whether Weichbrodt was crossing U.S. 21 or walking alongside the highway. The driver had not been charged in connection with her death.
Monday’s fatal collision remains under investigation by the SCHP.
