Family of missing 84-year-old man in northeastern New Brunswick seek help finding him

The family of a missing 84-year-old man from northeastern New Brunswick is asking for the public's help to find him.

Marcel Berthiaume of Trout Brook, about 30 kilometres northwest of Miramichi, has not been in contact with family or friends since May 20.

Relative Cheryl Waye, who has been posting about his disappearance on Facebook, says it's unusual for Berthiaume to be out of touch for such a long period.

Although Berthiaume is known to take drives in the woods, mainly in the Mullin Stream and Fraser Burchill Road areas, he usually goes prepared, she said.

"If he does go for a day, like a day trip, he's home by supper time, like six o'clock or whatever, and he does travel with a jug of gas in case he runs out of gas when he goes to the woods, so he would have gas with him," said Waye.

"His grandson [Devon] checked the shed and the gas jugs are gone, so he says he's got his gas with him wherever he's gone, so that's why he's figuring he's gone to the woods with gas."

"And like Devon said, he probably had water with him and a little bit of food. Like he probably wouldn't have enough for three days, but he would have some snack or something with him for sure."

The Sunny Corner RCMP believe Berthiaume is driving his blue 2008 Jeep Liberty, with New Brunswick licence plate JIA 316.

Police issued a statement on Tuesday, requesting the public's assistance locating Berthiaume.

His relatives and friends have also been helping with the search efforts, said Waye.

Berthiaume is described as being five feet seven inches tall and about 150 pounds, with white hair.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts or who may have seen him or his vehicle Saturday is asked to contact the Sunny Corner detachment of the Northeast District RCMP at 506-836-6000.
