The 9 biggest snubs from the 2024 Oscar nominations
There were a few major snubs from the 2024 Oscar nominations, which were announced Tuesday morning.
Both "Barbie" director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie didn't get nominated.
"The Color Purple" did not get nominated for best picture.
Nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday, and a handful of worthy contenders were noticeably absent from multiple categories.
From Greta Gerwig to Charles Melton, here are the nine biggest snubs from the nominations.
Penélope Cruz did not get a best supporting actress nomination for "Ferrari."
Cruz delivers a tour-de-force performance as Laura Ferrari, a woman dealing with grief and a husband who doesn't care for her. She's a highlight in this Michael Mann-directed drama.
Yet, this year, there was no love for this 2008 Oscar winner.
Charles Melton missed out on a best supporting actor nomination for "May December."
In "May December," Melton plays Joe Yoo, a thirtysomething man coming to grips with his past now that he's the same age his wife (Julianne Moore) was when she initiated a sexual relationship with him at the age of 13.
Despite universal acclaim for his performance, Melton was left off the Oscar nominees list.
Not all critical darlings get their just rewards.
"Killers of the Flower Moon" was not nominated for best adapted screenplay.
Martin Scorsese's epic looks at the mysterious deaths of members of the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma.
While the movie is based on a best-selling book and adapted by Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth, the script somehow didn't make the cut in the eyes of the Academy voters.
"Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie" did not get a best documentary feature nomination.
This documentary's previous success possibly led to its Oscars snub.
"Still," which looks at the life and career of Michael J. Fox, had already won four Emmys. The Academy usually doesn't like giving love to titles that have already found Emmys glory, so that's likely the reason for the omission.
The "Peaches" song from "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" did not get nominated for best original song.
Despite being an internet sensation, Bowser's ballad to Princess Peach in "The Super Mario Brothers Movie," performed masterfully by Jack Black, did not get any love from the Academy.
Leonardo DiCaprio didn't get a best actor nomination for his performance in "Killers of the Flower Moon."
DiCaprio delivered one of his most complex performances playing greedy husband Ernest Burkhart, but apparently, it wasn't enough for the Oscars. Not even withstanding slaps from a paddle at the hands of Robert De Niro could get him over the line with Academy voters.
However, if you asked him about the snub, we're sure he would be mostly thrilled that his costar, Lily Gladstone, nabbed the nomination for best actress.
"Barbie" star Margot Robbie did not get nominated for best actress.
Here's where the snubs really start to hurt. Despite "Barbie" being a massive sensation in 2023, its star, Robbie, wasn't recognized by voters.
Robbie's omission will likely go down as one of the Oscars' biggest misses ever.
Greta Gerwig did not get a best director nomination for "Barbie."
This was another complete shocker.
Warner Bros. had been trying to bring Barbie to the big screen for decades. Gerwig, along with star and producer Robbie, finally cracked the code.
So it's puzzling how she didn't get recognized for her efforts in navigating this iconic IP to box-office glory — especially considering that the Academy deems it worthy of a best picture nomination.
At least Gerwig still scored a nod for best adapted screenplay.
"The Color Purple" did not get a best picture nomination.
"The Color Purple" features an amazing cast, incredible musical numbers, and a backing from Oprah. But at the end of the day, it was shut out of the biggest prize.
This is another big head-scratcher. Oscars, you have to do better.
