Aaron Wan-Bissaka wants to regain England right-back place and will turn down DR Congo
Aaron Wan-Bissaka wants to win his England place back and will resist switching countries to represent DR Congo.
The Manchester United right-back, 22, qualifies for the African nation and played for their Under-20s as a teenager while in the youth ranks at Crystal Palace.
He earned a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad at the start of last season, before pulling out through injury, and has not been in the England manager’s plans since.
However, it is understood he is focused on earning a place in Southgate’s group of players as England prepare for the European Championship next year.
Congo have previously been open to him returning to their international set-up after his brief spell with their Under-20s. The full-back then went on to play for England Under-20s as he broke into the first team at Selhurst Park.
His path to the seniors has been blocked by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker and now Reece James commanding a place in the squad. However, Southgate has picked extra right-backs as he has little cover on the other flank for Ben Chilwell. Walker has also been used as a centre-back.
Wan-Bissaka is still battling for his place back a year on from his initial call-up. He recently added the Congo flag to the biography on his Instagram account but would like to compete for an England place.
His recentl good form has been highlighted, particularly his goal against Newcastle United last weekend, the first time he has found the net for United since his £50million move at the start of last season.
Former United captain Gary Neville recently suggested that Wan-Bissaka should concentrate on his main strength of defending, rather than looking to fulfil the expectations of being an attacking full-back.
“My view on it with Aaron Wan-Bissaka is that he should focus on his defending and become a brilliant Manchester United full back defensively, who keeps clean sheets. That’s number one, and he should focus on that,” said the Sky Sports pundit.
“The only other thing that I think he should do is try and create a relationship with his right winger whereby he can serve that player well and he can serve his central midfielder player well.”
