Adam Sandler has paid tribute to Cameron Boyce, who played his on-screen son in the movie Grown Ups, on what would have been his 21st birthday.

The actor, who also appeared in Disney's popular Descendants franchise, tragically died last year after suffering an epilepsy-related seizure in his sleep, linked to an "ongoing medical condition".

Sandler posted a photo of Boyce to his Instagram and wrote: "Happy birthday to Cameron. Would have been 21 years old. Such a great kid. We all miss him a lot. Especially his incredible family."

He also posted the URL to knowsudepnow.org, an organisation formed between The Epilepsy Foundation and The Cameron Boyce Foundation that attempts to raise awareness of, and combat, SUDEP (Sudden Expected Death in Epilepsy).

Grown Ups was released in 2010 to negative reviews but strong box office, and spawned a sequel, the similarly critically and commercially received Grown Ups 2, in 2013.

This year's Oscars ceremony did not include Cameron Boyce in its In Memoriam segment, which led to an outcry from fans.

A spokesperson for the Academy said at the time that: "The Academy receives hundreds of requests to include loved ones and industry colleagues" and that their committee has a "limited time" to decide who makes the telecast. Boyce was included in the In Memoriam section on the Oscars website.

Disney Channel released the third Descendants movie just a month after Boyce's passing, and it proved to be a very big hit for the House of Mouse.

All three Descendants movies are available to watch now on Disney+.
