Adam Sandler Sang a Coronavirus Song for Doctors and Nurses
There’s something charming about the lo-fi approach late-night TV shows hosts and guests (like Adam Sandler) have been forced to adopt due to self-isolation. It’s relatable—broadcasts are only slightly more professional than your most recent Zoom meeting, and, yes, Jimmy Fallon’s house looks a little nicer than your apartment, but he’s still recording from his home. Fallon’s Tonight Show guest on Thursday, Sandler, had that same scrappy aesthetic when he video-chatted in to sing a song honoring all the doctors and nurses who are combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fallon and Sandler began by just shooting the shit, with Sandler telling Fallon to say hi to his kids from him and recounting a recent call he’d received from Dan Akroyd (who was a fan of Uncut Gems, apparently!) Then, Sandler began to sing his song, which he explained that he hadn’t yet memorized.
“I’ll put these on so you don’t see me peaking at my notes so much,” he said, donning a pair of sunglasses. “I’m very smart.”
The song is charming, with rhymes that feel a little slapdash and forced that give it a real DIY-vibe. It brings to mind Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song,” only this was recorded via video-chat and not Saturday Night Live’s Studio 8H. During the song, Sandler shouts out medical professionals of all sorts, giving them earnest thanks while getting a few solid jokes in, too. (“Nurses give you ice packs and pain medication while your doctor is smoking on the roof,” he sings).
“Doctors and nurses will save us from this mess if we get them the supplies they need / And I hope they save us soon, because I’m getting really, really sick of my family,” Sandler continues, making a point to thank Italian doctors, Spanish doctors, and Chinese doctors—both in China and here in the United States.
If you’re looking for something to do as you self-isolate, it doesn’t seem like Adam Sandler’s coronavirus song would be that hard to learn. Just saying.
