Addison Rae Said We're Wearing Thongs Over Our Pants Now

If there's one star who has truly embraced the return of all things 2000s, it's Addison Rae. The star was born in the year 2000, so she didn't really get to experience all the trends of the era, both classic and cringeworthy, but she's fully embraced them in her twenties. One of the '00s trends she seems to love the most is the exposed thong look, which was popularized by pop stars like Britney Spears back in the day. (And we know Rae loves Britney!)
In a recent Instagram Story photo dump of moments from the past few weeks, Rae showed off a perplexing thong-over-pants outfit. In the pic, which was taken by someone else from behind in what appears to be a hotel room, the “Aquamarine” singer poses in a pair of light gray yoga pants with a white lace thong layered atop them instead of under them, plus a matching white bra on top.
Maybe not the most practical outfit of all time, but given the casual nature of the photo, she was probably just playing around and having fun. However, Spears did famously wear a pink thong over her jeans in her “I'm a Slave 4 U” music video, so it's not entirely surprising that Rae would subtly pay homage to her pop icon in this way.
Addison Rae also channeled Spears in July 2024, when she hopped onstage at a Charli XCX show to perform their duet of “Von Dutch.” She wore low-rise pinstripe pants with a lace-up hip detail, a cropped black shirt, and a black string thong peeking out from the waistline of the pants — a thong that was embellished with a rhinestone “A,” no less. Underwear doesn't have to hide under your clothes! It can be a fashion statement in itself. Just ask Addison!
