It's increasingly looking like Adele's mammoth 2016-2017 tour will be her last. After announcing two enormous Wembley shows for this summer called "The Finale", the 28-year-old appeared to rule out future touring during the final show of her year-long tour in Auckland, New Zealand, on Sunday night.

"Touring isn't something I'm good at – applause makes me feel a bit vulnerable. I don't know if I will ever tour again," she told her audience during a rain-sodden stadium performance, according to the New Zealand Herald. "The only reason I've toured is you. I'm not sure if touring is my bag. My greatest accomplishment in my career is this tour."

This is not the first time Adele has spoken about her discomfort on stage. In 2015 she told US broadcaster NPR: "I get so nervous with live performances that I'm too frightened to try anything new. It's actually getting worse. Or it's just not getting better, so I feel like it's getting worse, because it should've gotten better by now.”

For the past few months tabloid rumours have suggested the Skyfall singer may be hanging up her stage costumes for at least a decade.

In September, a source told The Sun that Adele wanted to concentrate on raising her son, rather than touring: "Adele doesn't want to miss a moment of Angelo growing up and it's an easy decision for her to give up touring for him. Right now she is saying she won't do another massive world tour like the current one for another 10 years."

Last week, her tour manager told the Australian Daily Telegraph that audiences may never see her again after her Wembley shows: "We may never see her again. Adele's been quoted as saying she won't tour again, she's doing this big tour as a recognition of her huge record sales and the enormous demand to see her live. It's impossible to tell what happens next."

Adele started this tour in February 2016, and has been almost entirely on the road since. However, she has called our bluff before, when she repeatedly denied that she would be headlining Glastonbury throughout 2015 and early 2016, before taking the Worthy Farm stage by storm on the Saturday night of the festival.

Tickets for The Finale shows at Wembley Arena this summer sold out in seconds, much to fans' disappointment.
