Aerial Footage Shows Damaged Village After Deadly Afghanistan Earthquake

Aerial footage released by authorities in Afghanistan shows severe damage to a village in Paktika, one of the provinces struck by a deadly 5.9-magnitude earthquake early Wednesday, June 22.

Afghanistan’s Taliban government said at least 1,000 people were killed and hundreds more injured.

Homes were destroyed across the Paktika districts of Gyan, Naki, Barmal, and Ziruk, and the Khost district of Spera, according to the country’s disaster management agency. Most of the deaths were recorded in Paktika province, they said.

Khalid Zadran, the spokesman for the Kabul police, who was visiting the area, said this footage shows the small village of Lwara in the Barmal district. He said 150 civilians in Lwara died.

Financial aid was being made available to victims, officials said. The Taliban also called for help from “the international community, charities, and humanitarian agencies.” Credit: Khalid Zadran via Storyful
