Sept. 17 (UPI) -- An African snake is being cared for by authorities in Connecticut after apparently being abandoned in a reservoir area.

Burlington & Canton Animal Control said on social media that a Metropolitan District of Connecticut Police officer found the snake at the Nepaug Reservoir, off Route 202 in Canton.

The snake is believed to have been intentionally dumped in the area by parties who fled from the scene.

Animal control said the snake "is in custody and is safe."

Releasing non-native animals is illegal in Connecticut, and investigators are looking into the python's origins.
