Passenger avoids excess luggage fees by wearing all her clothes at once
This passenger found an innovative way to avoid paying excess baggage fees: wear all your clothes at once.
Gel Rodriguez, from the Philippines, was told by airline staff that her carry-on luggage exceeded the maximum weight by 2kg.
Rather than pay the additional fee, she decided it was best to wear as many of her clothes as she could, putting on layer after layer of pants, shirts and long-sleeved tops.
She posted about her quick-thinking at the airport on Facebook, creating a social media storm. Her post was shared more than 20,000 times, with 1,000 fellow travellers commenting about it.
One person said: “Wonderful game plan,” while another added: “No rules for that for sure.”
Speaking to VICE, Gel joked that if she had known her post would go viral, she would have posed better.
But she cautioned other travellers not to do the same thing.
She added: “It was really hot. I don’t recommend other people do it.”
Similar attempts to avoid the excess luggage fees has not ended favourably though.
In 2018, a British artist was kicked off a flight by the captain after he attempted to wear 10 shirts and eight pairs of pants, and in 2015 a member of a Scottish boyband suffered heat exhaustion when he wore all his clothes on a flight.
