Aklavik to host 2024 Gwich'in Annual General Assembly

This year's Gwich'in Annual General Assembly is scheduled to take place from August 21-22.

The event happens each year in one of the four Gwich’in settlement communities of Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic, Aklavik or Inuvik.

This time, the assembly will take place at Aklavik's Moose Kerr School according to a Tuesday Gwich’in Tribal Council announcement.

The meeting will feature an election for the Gwich'in Tribal Council's grand chief and deputy grand chief positions. Each serves a four-year term.

In 2020, Ken Kyikavichik replaced Bobbie Jo Greenland-Morgan, who stepped down after one term.

Last year's annual meeting, pushed to October due to the NWT wildfires, started off with heated exchanges between community representatives and the grand chief – concluding with a vote that caused two Designated Gwich'in Organization presidents to be permanently removed.
