Alberta Health warns of poor air quality due to wildfires

Alberta Health has issued a precautionary air quality advisory for the province due to wildfires burning in the north.

Wildfires in northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories are causing smoky conditions and the air quality is expected to get worse over the weekend.

"In smoky conditions, even healthy individuals may experience temporary irritation of eyes and throat, and possibly shortness of breath," health officials wrote in a press release.

People with respiratory and cardiovascular conditions might find the smoky air makes their condition worse, according to the release.

"These individuals should monitor for worsening of symptoms and take the precautions routinely recommended by their physicians if a worsening of symptoms occurs. Children and elderly are also at higher risk of smoke-related illness."

Alberta Health issued tips to reduce smoke inside homes and vehicles.
