Alberta man gets 7 years for smuggling cocaine into Canada

A member of an Alberta Mennonite community is heading to prison for seven years for smuggling drugs from Mexico to Canada.

Jacob Fehr was working for a cartel when he was caught with cocaine at the Canadian-U.S. border.

A Calgary courtroom heard it was the third round trip driving from Mexico.

Fehr told border officials at the time that he had been forced into it and cartel members had threatened his wife and four daughters.

The 38-year-old from Peace River was visibly upset in court Friday afternoon knowing that he would be taken away from his family.

Fehr did offer an apology, which a Calgary judge considered to be "heartfelt" and a mitigating factor in his sentence.
