Albertans react to new user fees, taxes in budget

Despite new user fees and higher taxes introduced in Thursday’s budget, Premier Jim Prentice says we still live in the lowest-taxed jurisdiction in Canada.

“The time has come for us to pull together, to contribute a little bit more and to get through this together,” Prentice said on Friday.

Try telling that to Albertans facing higher prices for cigarettes, alcohol and beer, as well as increased fees for birth certificates and marriage licenses.

The CBC’s James Hees took to the streets of Edmonton to see how people were making out. And he met people like Shaun Bremnes who thinks the government should ask resource companies, not drivers, to pay more.

“I do actually think they should get the royalties from the company rather than at the pump,” he said after gassing up his car.
