Gloucester have recruited Alex King as the club's new attack coach in the first appointment made to new head coach George Skivington's coaching staff.

King was part of Northampton's Premiership title-winning campaign in 2013-14 before leaving Franklin's Gardens, returning to France to work with Montpellier.

He previously coached in the Top 14 with Clermont Auvergne, joining the club's coaching staff after retiring as a player, with Clermont going on to win a first Top 14 title.

The long-term Wasps fly-half has previously worked with Wales, under Rob Howley during the 2016-17 season.

King will now link up once more with Danny Cipriani, the Gloucester fly-half. King started at 10 with Cipriani at full-back when Wasps defeated Leicester Tigers to win the Heineken Cup in 2007. King was also part of the Wasps' hat-trick of Premiership titles wins in 2003, 2004 and 2005, plus an earlier title in 1996-97, while also winning another Heineken Cup in 2004. He won five caps for England.

“I’m very excited to be joining Gloucester Rugby,” said King. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to be part of the future of a great club, with some of the most incredible fans in the game.

“I’m looking forward to being part of George’s new coaching team, and meeting the players soon.”

Skivington, who was appointed last month from London Irish, hailed King's pedigree.

“It’s fantastic to bring someone of Alex’s calibre to Gloucester Rugby,” said Head Coach, George Skivington.

“Alex is a highly-respected coach and his rugby brain is second to none. With his proven pedigree, he will bring a high level of skill and knowledge to the players, and the coaching team too.

“This is a really exciting appointment for us, and we are looking forward to welcoming Alex to this great club.”

King joins Tim Taylor and Trevor Woodman on the Gloucester coaching staff. Director of rugby David Humphreys, head coach Johan Ackermann and assistant coach Rory Teague have also recently left the club.
