Alien director Ridley Scott has teased the future of the long-running sci-fi series now that Disney owns the rights.

The British filmmaker revealed he'd be interested in making another instalment within the franchise, having helmed the original back in 1979, Prometheus and its most recent outing, Alien: Covenant, in 2017. But his hypothetical follow-up would be more of a Xenomorph origin story, than a straightforward continuation.

"I still think there's a lot of mileage in Alien, but I think you'll have to now re-evolve," he explained in a new interview with LA Times.

"What I always thought when I was making the first one [was], 'Why would a creature like this be made and why was it travelling in – what I always thought was – a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs? What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs?'

"That's the thing to question – who, why, and for what purpose is the next idea, I think," Scott concluded.

Both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant act as prequels to the first film, which is set in 2122, almost two decades after the latter. However, fans were quick to argue that each movie conjured up more questions about the titular monsters' beginnings than they did explicitly exploring them.

Particularly Covenant, which wound up positioning Michael Fassbender's android David as the antagonist, rather than the aliens themselves.

It'd be interesting to see if Scott's fourth picture would finally shed some light.
