She says there is some question about whether the playing field has changed under the province's new NDP government.

"There is some uncertainty in Alberta right now with respect to things like regulatory issues and royalties, and that sort of thing," said Redford.

She says it's going to be a tough time but Albertans are familiar with times of low oil prices.

Redford also said politicians have to be careful in singling out pipeline projects.

"Once political leaders start to abandon one pipeline project, then that opens the door to what's wrong with the rest of them as well," said Redford.

"And so some of the discussion I've seen in the past couple of days about political leaders sort of picking one pipeline and saying, 'But I like that one.' At the end of the day the discussion is not about the technicalities of the construction of a pipeline. It's about the industry, the environmental regulation."
