Alleged drunk driver crashes into SLO police car — while officers are doing a DUI sweep

Two San Luis Obispo police officers patrolling for drunk drivers got more than they bargained for on Wednesday night.

At about 11:50 p.m., the officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation at the intersection of Los Osos Valley Road and Froom Ranch Way, San Luis Obispo Police Department Lt. Aaron Schafer said.

The officers parked their two patrol vehicles in a line behind the suspect, then exited their vehicles to talk with the driver, Schafer said.

He said during the traffic stop, a drunk driver careened down the street and crashed into one of the police cars — which then pushed into the other police car.

The first police car suffered major damage, while the second was only moderately damaged, Schafer said.

No one was injured in the crash.

The driver, a 40-year-old Oceano resident, had a blood alcohol content of 2.5 times the legal limit, the Police Department posted on X. The officers arrested her on suspicion of drunk driving, the department said.

On Thursday morning, Schafer told The Tribune he did not know what happened to the first driver who was pulled over for a traffic stop.
