'Amazing Race Canada' Season 10: Eliminated couple Julia Viola, Olivia Curto were 'gullible' but played with respect
"We stuck to our own word and played the way that we wanted to play," Viola said
While married couple Julia Viola and Olivia Curto started this week's episode of The Amazing Race Canada Season 10 ahead of the pack, there was a big switch by the end of this leg of the race. A few too many delays pushed them back so far they were eliminated.
"It was a build up across those three middle challenges where ... we lost a little bit of time here and there, and then it adds up," Viola explained to Yahoo Canada. "And when you get this far into the race your margin for error is so slim and one mistake could cost you."
"So in the archives we were almost paying too much attention. We were going through every single article and trying to read every headline and just any kind of clue to find that Amazing Race article. And that took a little bit too long when in the end, it was just extremely obvious. It literally said Amazing Race in the title."
This week also marked the dreaded Double Pass, when two separate teams can be forced to stop their race to wait for the teams immediately behind. The team ahead can pick a team to be passed, or leave it for the teams behind to figure out. Viola and Curto decided not the use the Double Pass.
"When we got to that board, because we were in the top two teams with Michael [Crouse] and Tyson [Gillies], it didn't really affect us at that point," Viola explained. "We didn't know where everyone else was behind us in the race and we knew that the teams behind us would take care of it."
"We believe in good karma so we're just like, let's just not put anyone up here. Let's just keep doing our thing, keep focusing on us and let the other teams handle it behind us."
While the couple have competed in marathons, multiple IRONMAN races, and are triathletes, Amazing Race Canada really put their communication skills to the test.
"I think we learned that we absolutely belong together, even though we already knew that," Curto said. "We have very strong communication and because we've been together for so long, there wasn't really any surprises."
"Julia did come out of her comfort zone with charisma and fierceness and anger when we did get U-turned, ... and we never had that opportunity to compete together so I never saw that side of her before. But it did show that we can flip where, if she's a little bit heated ... I can play that more cool and collected side, and we can keep pushing forward."
'They fooled us'
A notable trend throughout the season is The Traitors Canada stars Kevin Martin and Gurleen Maan talking about sabotaging other teams, while also lying about their strategies to competitors.
"They fooled us. It's fine, it's a game," Curto said. "We're gullible Canadians who like to trust and love everybody, but they weren't going to get us a second time."
"At the end of the day the teams were catching on to that gameplay. And I mean, if that's the way that they chose to run their race, let's see how it goes."
"What we love about the show the most, and I feel like is the true spirit of The Amazing Race Canada, is getting everyday people who are competing together, taking on hard challenges, obstacles, being afraid at times, but then overcoming them and tackling them and achieving it together," Viola added. "Our mentality was to make some friendships and good alliances, and it's OK if you help each other out along the way, because why not? And then at the end we can battle it out for the for the big prize."
"It's not our style of gameplay, the lying or talking behind people's backs, and things like that. It's just not our style. So we don't agree with it, but we're glad that we stuck to our own word and played the way that we wanted to play, with sportsmanship and respect, and so we're proud of that."
