Amazon has announced the date of its third summer shopping event with Amazon Prime Day set for 30 hours over July 10-11. The sales event to rival Black Friday will see prices slashed on more than 100,000 items throughout the day.

For the first time the sale will take place over two days, beginning on Monday July 10 at 6pm, giving shoppers even more time to look for deals.

Sales will be open to Amazon Prime members, paying subscribers to Amazon's one-day delivery service. Prime Day is the retail giant's biggest day of the year.

The global sale will see discounts on items from technology gadgets to household supplies. Prime Day also serves as a means for increasing subscriptions to the retailer's Prime membership service, which offers faster delivery on thousands of items and access to Amazon's video streaming, eBook rental and early access to discounts.

Some discounts have already been announced by Amazon. There will be at least a 30pc price slash on these stylish Philips wireless lights, and the PetSafe Drinkwell Ceramic Avalon Pet Fountain will be available at just over half its original price.

A huge 65pc will be cut off the Hoover FD22G's original price, and this De'Longhi Nespresso machine can be purchased at half price.

Amazon will also show a teaser for series 2 of The Grand Tour to Prime members on the day.

In 2016, Amazon boosted year-on-year Prime Day sales by 60 per cent, including 90,000 TVs, two million toys, 200,000 headphones and 14,000 Lenovo laptops.

While Amazon has branded Prime Day as its summer sales event, other major retailers last year ran rival events and price discounts. UK high street names including John Lewis, Argos, Currys, Tesco Direct and Debenhams have all previously looked to head off Amazon's price cuts with their own price matching.

Major discounts can be expected on TVs, laptops, home supplies and Amazon's own brand products, such as its Fire Tablet and Kindle.

Other deals are expected on Amazon's Alexa-powered home assistant range, including the Amazon Echo and Amazon Echo Dot, which have been released in the 12 months since the last sales day.

Amazon will confirm a large number of deals a week before Prime Day giving shoppers the chance to access thousands of items before the main rush.

Amazon is believed to have more than 80 million Prime Members in the US alone, although it does not disclose the exact growth figures.
