How to get Amazon Prime Video free in the UK
There are many ways to get your TV fix – check out our guide to the best streaming services if you want some helping cutting through the tall grass – and content, like everything, costs money. But not always!
Amazon's Prime Video service is one of the biggest online repositories of TV and movies, as well as a thriving studio in its own right. With original series such as Cross, The Boys (and its spin-off Gen V), Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Reacher, Amazon is now an established player in the streaming space alongside the likes of Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Paramount+ and others.
If you want to try before you buy, here's how Amazon's free trial of Prime Video works, including how to get started and how to cancel membership if you don't want to take up a paid plan. There are also a couple of options for those who want to sign up through other means.

How to get an Amazon Prime Video free trial
If you're new, or haven't had Prime membership for a full year, you can get a 30-day free trial of the full Prime service (not just Prime Video) directly from Amazon.
Consider it a TV service with considerable added benefits: chiefly, free two-day shipping on eligible products from Amazon, but also Prime Music, free Deliveroo Plus delivery, discounted Odeon cinema tickets, a free monthly Twitch sub and more.
Don't forget to cancel before the end of the free trial period, of course, or Amazon will automatically assume you want to continue and bill you accordingly. More info on how to cancel if you don't want to continue follows below.
As of December 2024, pricing in the UK is £8.99 per month or £95 per year, and in the US it's $14.99 per month or $139 per year. To get the premium ad-free service, you'll pay an extra £2.99/$2.99 per month.
It's also worth noting that Prime Video's pricing can be confusing for newcomers. Basically, you get loads of content thrown in with your membership (all of it has the Prime logo in the corner of its thumbnail on the EPG).
But for premium content – ie movies that aren't part of that deal – you will pay extra, typically between £1.99 for the cheapest, Standard Definition rental and £19.99 for the most expensive UHD purchase. Most movies that aren't new releases are around £3.49 to rent, and there are a lot of them available.
Can I get an Amazon Prime student discount?
If you're 18-22 or a student, you can get six months free and a discounted membership thereafter.
This offer is for "certain Amazon Prime benefits", and renews at a reduced rate of £4.99 per month or £47.49 per year. One key point of difference is that you can't share your membership benefits with anyone else in your household if you're a Prime Student member.
However, eligibility for this type of membership is strict – you'll need to show evidence that you're "enrolled in a higher education institution geographically located in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland".
Ideally, Amazon would like to see evidence that you have an email address registered to a place of study that meets this criteria – but if that isn't possible, then it will verify your eligibility for Prime Student membership via "an alternative sign-up process".
Amazon Prime free with Vodafone
If you're a Vodafone customer – or considering joining them – then Vodafone's VeryMe Rewards include the opportunity to get three months of Amazon Prime for £1 – just check out the My Vodafone app.
New customers can also get 24 months of YouTube Premium or Prime Video (not the whole Amazon Prime package, just the video content) with a number of their plans.
Amazon Prime free with T-Mobile
If you're in the US and a Metro by T-Mobile subscriber you can get a full subscription free by signing up to their Unlimited plan.
