Jonas Budd, suspect in fatal shooting, sought by RCMP in Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Police in Saskatchewan and Manitoba are searching for Jonas Budd, 43, who they believe is responsible for the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy at the home of the teen's girlfriend, the suspect's stepdaughter, on the Lac La Ronge reserve.

The girl was the subject of an Amber Alert Wednesday morning when RCMP reported she was allegedly abducted by Budd. She was found, safe, a few hours after the alert was issued.

RCMP said Budd may be in Saskatchewan or Manitoba and has connections in Thompson, Man., and a number of Saskatchewan communities, including Cumberland House, Pinehouse, Sturgeon Landing and Prince Albert.

Officials from the RCMP were not immediately releasing details on the dead boy's identity.

However, CBC News spoke to a family member, Gerald Venne, who confirmed the shooting victim is Dustin Bird, 17. Venne, who is related to the boy's grandmother, added the youth was in a relationship with the teen girl.

Police believe the shooting happened before the 17-year-old girl was allegedly abducted from her La Ronge home, which is about 390 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

RCMP said there were four people in the home at the time of the shooting: the victim, the suspect, the teenage girl and an adult man. They said no one else was injured in the shooting and they received a 911 call from someone in the home.

Police issued an Amber Alert, used in missing child cases, but about two hours later it was cancelled when the girl was located safe by members of the Cranberry Portage RCMP detachment in Manitoba. Members of that detachment found the girl in a rural community in Saskatchewan, east of La Ronge.

Investigators believe Budd fled on foot into the bush. He is believed to be armed with a rifle and is considered dangerous, police said.

In an interview with CBC News, Glenn Budd of Sturgeon Lake, Sask., urged his brother to surrender to police.

"All I have to say is for him to turn himself in and not to hurt anybody," he said.

"Boy, it's hard. I'm the oldest of the family and I don't know where I went wrong. I tried to treat all of my brothers and sisters the best way I can. I don't know where I failed with my brother."

RCMP added the suspect was likely driving a grey 2001 GMC Sierra 1500, extended cab, two-wheel-drive pickup with Saskatchewan plate 043 JEZ, police said.

Police are asking anyone who sees Budd to call 911, and not approach him.

Anyone with information can also call the Amber Alert phone line at 1-877-762-6237.
