Aminé Just Made a Statement With His TV Debut on ‘Fallon’
Aminé just told us a lot.
Following the success of his catchy hit "Caroline," the Portland rapper had our attention—but there were questions.
With a small catalog of music and limited performance experience behind him, some were wondering: Could he live up to the expectations and pressures of a massively successful debut single? Is there a deeper side to him? Or will he always live in the lane of a fun lighthearted artist who raps about “bad thangs” and Netflix passwords?
On Tuesday night, under the bright lights of The Tonight Show, he gave us answers. After confidently working through the opening verses with the help of a string section and trio of hometown backup singers, Aminé went off script.
He took a risk. The lights lowered and he stared down the cameras—delivering a brand new, beautifully timed, political verse:
"9-11, a day that we're never forgetting / 11-9, a day that we're all regretting / If my President is Trump then it's relevant enough to talk about it on TV and not give a **** / I'm black and I'm proud, my skin is brown and I'm loud / Everybody love it when a rapper tell some lines, well that ain't me homie I guess that's a surprise / America want to act all happy and holy, well deep down inside they like Brad and Jolie / Caroline divine and I won't get specific, Club Banana the illest and it too terrific / You can never make America great again, all you ever did was make this country hate again."
On the biggest night of his career so far, Aminé used his stage to speak to a larger, more important message. And in doing so, he worked through a series of unchecked boxes, proving there’s more to this guy than just another rapper who lucked out with a viral hit. He’s more than a Kylie Jenner co-sign and a pile of bananas. He has something to say.
