Custodians are the unsung heroes of many schools. They are at the school working long after the students go home to ensure that the classrooms are neat and sanitized before the kids return in the morning. They’re there when students have an impromptu food fight, when a science class has a mishap in the lab, or when a student decides the underside of a desk is the perfect place to put his chewing gum.

At Stafford High School in Stafford County, Va., one student went out of his way to get to know one of the custodians.

Before Angel Echevarria started to work at the school, he was homeless for four years. He credits his wife for the turnaround in his life. “She kind of took me out of that whole lifestyle,” Echevarria explained.

“Angel’s one of those people that was always smiling, saying ‘God bless. Have a good day,’” Tristan McAlister, a senior at the high school, told NBC 4 in Washington, D.C.

Echevarria and McAlister initially bonded over shoes and sports. “We had a really good connection there,” McAlister said.

“When I saw him, I was just like, ‘This kid’s pretty cool,'” Echevarria shared.

During a recent conversation, McAlister asked his friend what type of shoes he should buy for himself. When Echevarria said to get a pair of Jordan 8s, McAlister asked him if he had a pair. Echevarria responded, “No, I got four kids. I can’t shop for myself.”

So McAlister bought a pair for his friend. McAlister’s mother, wanting to see Echevarria’s face when he received the present, encouraged her son to have a friend film the surprise.

“Just to be able to know that he would be able to bless me with what he did was just amazing. It truly touched my heart,” Echevarria said.
