Las Vegas shooting claims the lives of four Canadians
The mass shooting at a concert in Las Vegas has claimed the lives of at least 58 people, with officials now saying four of the victims were from Canada. The massacre is America’s worst mass shooting event in its history, and one that has victims from other countries.
The four Canadians who lost their lives at the Route 91 Harvest Festival: Jordan McIldoon from Maple Ridge, B.C. and Jessica Klymchuk, from Edmonton, Calla Medig from Jasper and Tara Roe of Okotoks, Alta.
McIldoon, 23, was among the dozens of people killed in a mass shooting that started near the end of an outdoor concert in Las Vegas on Sunday night.
According to a Facebook post by Heather Gooze, a woman who was on the scene, McIldoon died in her arms.
His parents, Al and Angela McIldoon, confirmed their son’s death—saying he had attended the Route 91 Harvest music festival with his girlfriend, hoping to return Monday night.
“We only had one child,” they said. “We just don’t know what to do.”
McIldoon was a heavy-duty mechanic apprentice and about to start trade school in the Okanagan.
The second victim, Edmonton resident Klymchuk was a mother of four and worked at a Catholic school in Valleyview, east of Grande Prairie.
Calla’s death prompted an outpouring of condolences from the tight-knit Jasper community.
“Calla was among the kindest and warm-hearted beautiful souls I have ever had the pleasure to know,” Bailey Huebner, Medig’s former co-worker wrote on Facebook. “Her smile made such a positive impact on my life.”
Calla was 28 at the time of her death.
Roe was the latest Canadian confirmed to have died during the shooting, with news alerts coming out earlier today. A mother of two young children, she got separated from her husband and friends when the gunman opened fire.
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley also sent her condolences during a meeting of premiers in Ottawa.
“On behalf of all Albertans, we are so deeply sorry for your loss,” Notley said Tuesday at a meeting of premiers in Ottawa. “You are in our thoughts and in our prayers and, in our hearts, all Albertans stand with you.”
Two Manitoba women are also in a Las Vegas hospital after being shot on Sunday night.
