Andie's All-Stars: Kwawenná:wi Diabo-Alfred

Kwawenná:wi Diabo-Alfred is the gym teacher at Karonhianonhnha Tsí Ionterihwaienstakhwa — a Mohawk immersion school in Kahnawake.

But she is much more than just a gym teacher.

"Me and her is best friends," says 7-year-old student, Teionahose.

It's a sentiment echoed by many of the students who are coached by Kwawenná:wi.

This weekend, she will take 34 students to the First Nations Education Council Games. It's like a mini Olympics for First Nations schools across Quebec, held at the University of Laval in Quebec City.

The games are the culmination of a year's worth of practices, organizing teams between the two schools in Kahnawake, fundraising, and encouraging students to maintain good behavior and academics.

The after school sports that Kwawenná:wi organizes are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the challenges she will takes on.

She helped to get the school a soccer field. She was a major force in getting a walking/running path put around the school, which is used by the whole community.

Kwawenná:wi is even heavily involved with the Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Program (KSDPP). The list goes on and on.

"That's Kwawenná:wi in a nutshell —very modest, humble...She'll do everything. She'll give you the shirt off her back and then she won't take credit for it at all. Its 100 per cent about the kids," said fellow coach, Kaniehtanoron.
